Inside the Supply Chain of the Global Flower Industry
Fresh flowers are everywhere: grocery stores, wedding arrangements, and boxes delivered straight to people’s doors. They can seem like one of the simplest products we buy, but most cut flowers move through an enormous international supply chain before they ever reach a vase.
A single stem may pass through a breeder, propagator, grower, exporter, importer, wholesaler, and retailer. Gypsophila, better known as baby’s breath, is a useful flower to follow through that system. Once treated mostly as inexpensive filler, it has become one of the most commercially important cut flowers in the world. Following where it comes from also gives a pretty good picture of how the modern flower trade works.
The process starts with breeders, who develop new varieties for qualities that make flowers easier to grow, sell, ship, and use. That can mean longer vase life, sturdier stems, particular colors or flower forms, or better performance after long-distance transportation. Many of these varieties are patented, with royalties paid when growers license and produce them.
Israeli breeder Danziger, for example, helped reshape the commercial baby’s breath market with proprietary varieties including ‘Million Star’ and ‘XLence’. Those varieties are now grown for the cut flower trade around the world. But breeders generally are not producing every finished stem themselves. Their genetics move next through propagation farms, where stock plants are multiplied into rooted cuttings, plugs, and other starter material that can be shipped to commercial growers. This work is often concentrated in places where climate and growing conditions allow plants to be propagated consistently and at enormous scale. Danziger, for instance, operates propagation facilities in Kenya, Guatemala, and Colombia.
From there, the starter plants go to commercial flower farms, where they are grown to maturity, harvested, graded, packed, and prepared for export. Geography matters enormously here. Colombia supplies roughly 75% of the flowers imported into the United States, Ecuador is especially well known for long-stemmed roses, and Kenya and Ethiopia are major suppliers to the European market.
Farms such as Rosamina in Colombia and Black Tulip in Kenya grow baby’s breath at commercial scale, including varieties licensed from breeders such as Danziger. A flower that may have begun as a breeding selection in Israel can therefore be propagated in one country, grown in another, and eventually sold thousands of miles away.
Smaller flower farms participate in this system too, although usually through a different set of intermediaries. Rather than working directly with a breeder, many growers buy young plants from plug suppliers that specialize in rooted cuttings and starter plants. In the United States, companies such as Farmer Bailey’s, Ball Horticultural, Plug Connection, and Gro ‘n Sell make patented and specialty varieties available to growers who could never practically maintain breeder stock themselves.
That means even a small local flower farm can be connected to a much larger international network of plant breeding, patents, propagation, and licensing. The flower may be locally grown while the genetics and plant material behind it have already traveled through several other places.
Finished flowers move through another network altogether. After harvest, flowers intended for export are packed into boxes and shipped, usually under refrigeration, toward major distribution hubs. Once they reach their destination market, importers and wholesalers handle customs clearance, agricultural inspections, storage, sales, and redistribution. In the United States, companies such as Esprit Miami and Mayesh move flowers through wholesale channels to florists and other buyers. In Europe, enormous volumes of cut flowers pass through the Dutch auction system before being redistributed across the continent.
By this point, information about who originally bred a variety can become almost invisible. A wholesaler may sell a bunch simply as “white gypsophila,” even when the plants ultimately trace back to a patented cultivar developed by a particular breeding company.
Then come the retailers: supermarkets, independent florists, wedding designers, and online flower companies. In the United States, baby’s breath regularly appears in flowers sold by businesses such as Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Costco, 1-800-Flowers, and UrbanStems. A shopper picking up a bouquet usually has no way of knowing who bred the flowers, where the starter plants were propagated, or even where every stem was grown.
That is part of what makes baby’s breath interesting to me. Something that looks completely ordinary in a grocery store bucket can carry the fingerprints of an entire industry.
Danziger began as a family flower business in Israel and became a major international breeder whose varieties are now grown across multiple continents. Its role is largely invisible by the time those flowers reach a customer, but the genetics remain. Patents and licensing allow breeders like Danziger to influence which varieties farms grow, which varieties wholesalers carry, and ultimately which flowers become familiar to the public.
So when I look at a bunch of baby’s breath, I don’t really see a generic filler flower anymore. I see breeding, intellectual property, propagation farms, international agriculture, refrigerated freight, wholesalers, and retail, all compressed into something that can be picked up with the groceries.
